Position Description

 

The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics was established in 1997 as a result of Senator Dole’s gift of his papers to the University of Kansas.  The Dole Institute makes the Senator’s official and personal papers and congressional materials available to scholars and the public alike, and hosts a continuing set of lively programs that connect public policy to faculty, students, office holders, and the general public. 

 

The mission of the Dole Institute of Politics is to promote political and civic participation as well as civil discourse in a bi-partisan, philosophically balanced manner. By providing a forum for discussion of political and economic issues, fostering public service leadership and encouraging participation in the political process, we emphasize that politics is an honorable profession and provide opportunities for all to interact with political leaders, practitioners    and authors. The Dole Institute also emphasizes that only through political and civic participation can citizens redirect the course of our nation.

 

The Robert J. Dole Archive and Special Collections department is responsible for overseeing research and museum functions at the Dole Institute of Politics. Our collections include one of the largest congressional manuscript collections in the country which attracts researchers from around the world. In addition the collections include over 25,000 photographs, hundreds of videos and several thousand objects accumulated by Senator Dole over the course of his 35 year political career.

 

The Senior Archivist will lead the archival team to promote the growth and development of the Dole Institute Library, Archive and Museum, as well as support the mission of the Dole Institute of Politics. This position emphasizes supervisory skills, excellent written and oral communication skills and individual initiative. The Senior Archivist is responsible to the Director of the Dole Institute for Politics and will submit written reports regarding all details of the Archive’s activities. Duties include:

 

70% Leadership and Management:

• Working with archive staff and the user community to establish goals and priorities for the Archive department and encourage innovation and creative initiatives related to the mission of the Dole Institute.

• Develop departmental policies and procedures; includes policies for access and the use of archival materials and manage the Dole Institute Reading Room.

• Plan for staff, equipment, and space needs and manage resources to meet established goals and priorities.

• Develop and manage budgets for the archive department.

• In conjunction with the Director and Development Director, seek financial support for collections and operations.

• Supervise three professional staff members.

• Direct collection development for the Dole Archive, Library and Museum.

• Oversee the development and preservation of the Dole Institute’s programming archive.

• Supervise the preservation, arrangement and description of archival materials in a variety of formats.

• Oversee creation of exhibits and archival programs.

 

30% Education and Outreach:

• Teach classes and instruction sessions.

• Provide reference assistance.

• Represent the Dole Institute in the academic community; with donors, collectors, and the general public; and in the library and archival professions.

• Serve as liaison with and resource to the University’s libraries and faculty.

• Foster a collaborative work environment, encouraging personnel to form partnerships with other departments and units throughout the University, the University Libraries and regional institutions.

• Cultivate and develop relationships with potential donors and sellers of materials.

• Promote national visibility for archive.

 

Required Qualifications

1.      MLS or MLIS from an institution accredited by the American Library Association with a minimum of five years archival experience OR Master’s degree in a subject area other than Library Science with a minimum of seven years archival experience.

2.      Progressively increasing responsibility as evidenced by work history and application materials.

3.      Minimum of three years supervisory experience.

4.      Knowledge of best practices, trends and issues in archives and special collections including the use of technology for preservation and delivery of collections information as evidenced by application materials.

5.      Experience planning and implementing educational programs that promote special collections and their use by the students, scholars and the broader public.

6.      Excellent written communication skill as evidenced by application materials.

7.      Evidence of professional development and commitment to same for staff.

 

NOTE: This position requires the Physical ability to lift and move boxes weighing forty pounds, either with or without accommodation.  

 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience working with political archives.
  2. Experience working in a University setting.
  3. Experience working in a hybrid archive/museum facility.
  4. Experience using Archon or Archivist’s Toolkit.
  5. Archival Certification through the Academy of Certified Archivists.
  6. Professional involvement with archival organizations at the regional or national level.
  7. Experience in collections acquisition.
  8. Experience increasing an archive’s visibility as evidenced by application materials.

 

Terms of Appointment: 

The Senior Archivist is a full-time unclassified professional staff position (non-faculty). Salary is dependent on qualifications: hiring range is $55,000 - $65,000, depending on qualifications.
