I think Guy is right, that there has been no formula. At least I never heard of one. But Christine's question got me thinking, and I came up with a candidate formula, now posted here:

I settled on the same basic rule-of-thumb as Guy, to use twice the width of an individual work to set the spacing. And I thank Guy for the idea that this factor should be increased for smaller works.
Here's the formula. You can find out what all the elements of the equation mean in the blog post:
Total Linear Space required to exhibit the art = ((n +p) x (2 x ((w1 + w2 + w3 + ... )/n))) + T + (q x S)
I'd appreciate any comments aimed at making this formula more useful or more realistic.

I think this entirely depends on the artwork in question and the curator or exhibition designer doing the hanging. But if you need a number, for a linear display, a rule of thumb might be that the distance apart would be the width of each piece. So if you double the collective width of the pieces to be hung, you wouldn't be far off. There might also be a minimum of one person-width for each smaller piece to avoid crowding. If works are hung "salon style" any calculation goes out the window since many pieces are hung together, horizontally and vertically. Here is the Walker Art Center doing that: http://www.twocoatsofpaint.com/2009/11/hanging-salon-style-at-walker.htmlGuy-------------------------------------------On Feb 20, 2012, at 11:20 AM, Christine End wrote:Hello All,
I wonder if any of you have a particular formula for figuring out the linear space needed to present framed two-dimensional works of art.
Thanks much!
