Hello! The University of Oklahoma College of Liberal Studies is assessing the need for an online Museum Studies Graduate Certificate. This certificate program will include 3-5 courses designed to enhance the skills of museum professionals and better prepare them to meet emerging 21st century needs.

Proposed course descriptions include:

Information, Communication and Technology in the 21st Century
Students will learn how to use current and innovative technology as a tool to research, organize, evaluate, and communicate information and enhance audience experiences.

Information and Media Literacy
Students will learn how to access information efficiently and effectively, evaluate information critically and competently, use information accurately and creatively, mange the flow of information from a variety of sources, understand how media can influence beliefs and behaviors, utilize the most appropriate media creation tools, and understand and utilize the most appropriate expressions and interpretations in a diverse, multi-cultural environment.

21st Century Themes: From Local to Global
Students will increase awareness about our rapidly changing society and economy and design collections, exhibits, and programs that keep audiences engaged and informed about relevant events and trends that advance global partnership solutions to solve difficult societal problems.

Digging into Data: Monitoring, Evaluation and Results
Students will learn how to design surveys and assessments to assist with continuous improvement efforts and develop ways to create new research for the 21st century scholarship.

Museum Development
Students will enhance collaboration, partnership, fund development, marketing and PR skills to sustain the viability of the future of museum programs.

Legal Issues in the 21st Century
Students will increase awareness of legal issues facing museum professionals such as contracts, repatriation, copyright, patents, ownership/co-ownership, and human resources.

Leadership and Management Skills
Students will increase their ability to adapt to varied roles and contexts, work effectively in an environment with ever-changing priorities, use interpersonal and problem-solving skills to influence others, demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior in using influence and power, and leverage social and cultural differences to create new ideas and increase innovation and quality of work.

Case Studies of 21st Century Museums
Students will analyze and evaluate a series of case studies of 21st Century Museums and develop best practices that can be incorporated into their own organization.
