Happy New Year!
I have a question regarding posters that are being sent to us electronically and printed out in-house. The artists are not expecting the jpgs back, and we are giving them credit for the artwork. What, if anything, should be accessioned? These posters would be museum-quality prints and are in keeping with our museum collection policies, but I am not sure how to handle them as far as accessioning. Do we accession the jpg, the poster, both, or none? We are inclined to say that the printed poster be accessioned as a gift from the artist, with the proper documentation that it was printed in-house.
A second scenario is that no hard copy of the poster was ever made and can only be printed from the artist’s website. Again, we have received approval to use the poster, and will give the artist credit for the work; however, should the in-house printed poster be accessioned or not?
