Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires
at least a Bachelor's
degree with major in history, education, social or political science,
anthropology, and/or museum studies
or closely related field from
an accredited institution of higher education
- Requires
5 (five) or more
years experience in operations/management of museums, historic sites,
historical societies and/or similar institutions
- Experience
planning and coordinating events
- Ability
to think creatively and strategically
- Excellent
written and oral skills
- High
level of interpersonal skills
- Self-directed
and motivated, detail and goal oriented
- Proficient
using computers
- Must
have a valid driver’s license
Preference
will be given to applicants with
- Master’s degree with a major in history,
education or a closely related field
- Basic knowledge of North Dakota and Northern
Great Plains history
- Classroom
experience
- Awareness of geology and archaeology
- Proven ability to form and maintain working
partnerships with other agencies and organizations
- Experience with grant writing and review

Summary of
Work:
Responsible for oversight of State Historical Society of North
Dakota statewide outreach program by managing resources such as educational
object-based traveling trunks program (SEND) and the virtual web-based
homestead course in classrooms, the traveling exhibits (TIES) program;
nurturing positive relationships with local and county historical organizations
statewide by coordinating community outreach and field services programs with
all SHSND divisions and faciliating agency marketing booths at events,
conferences and fairs.
Job Duties:
- Manage
Suitcase Exhibits for North Dakota (SEND) and the Traveling Interpretive
Exhibits Services (TIES) programs and North Dakota virtual homestead
course
- Assist
with National History Day in North Dakota
- Assist
with Governor’s Conference on North Dakota History
- Develop
statewide outreach program
- Coordinate
community outreach for all SHSND divisions
- Maintain
contact lists of historical organizations in the state
- Manage
county historical organization affiliation process
- Produce
Local Network quarterly newsletter
- Reserve
spaces, promote agencywide participation in, and exhibit content of SHSND
booths and coordinate staffing, transportation and lodging for these
efforts
- Support
the North Dakota Studies Project by assisting the Curator of Education
with curriculum connected program ideas, teacher training, gallery
activities, and outreach programs
- Serve
as SHSND representative to the Field Services Alliance program
- Serve
as SHSND representative to University of North Dakota's NASA Space Grant
Consortium program
- Coordinate
SHSND involvement in Heritage Outbound programming
- Assist
Curator of Education in developing, reviewing and updating printed and web-based
educational materials
- Make
recommendations to Curator of Education for instructional collections
items needed to support programs
- Present
educational programs
- Assist
state historic sites with annual educational events
- Assist
Curator of Education in responding to requests from higher education,
elementary, and secondary schools for presentations by providing
educational programs about North Dakota history
- Assist
Curator of Education in providing presentations on agency educational
resources at teacher in-service events statewide; and collaborate with
institutions of higher learning to provide teacher in-service
opportunities.
- Assist
Curator of Education with lectures, conferences, workshops, guided tours,
hands-on and web-based learning activities, interactive television
teaching, and educational trunks for a wide range of audiences.
- Manage
contracts and budgets for outreach programs and supervise contractors and
volunteers for programming needs
- Participate
and represent the agency at conferences and events
- Serve
on various committees as assigned
- Assist
with general agency duties as assigned
