Position Description:

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture / Laboratory of Anthropology and Museum of International Folk Art are hiring one Registrar to be shared between the two neighboring sister museums. The Museum Registrar supports the museum collections departments in the care of the permanent collections and any collections on loan to and from other institutions.  Duties include cataloging, image and database management, collection inventory, oversight of digital photography, and collection supply administration. The Museum Registrar works closely with the Curators in the pursuit of the Museum's collection goals, providing legal documents to donors as well as tracking donor and lender information utilizing museum best practices.

 

The Registrar assists in the day-to-day operation and management of the permanent collection, exhibitions and related registration activities including:

 

Create and maintain legal documents on all collections objects:

·        Accession and catalog incoming collections objects

·        Process all legal documents, such as gift agreements

·        Assign and maintain collections storage locations and shelf lists

·        Administer the collections management database

 

Coordinate object movement and record keeping for exhibitions and loans:

·        Schedule and supervise packing, shipping, insurance, condition reporting

·        Execute loan contracts and facilities reports

·        Provide courier service

·        Implement all loan requests

·        Manage collections and objects movement in storage and to and from exhibition galleries

·        Coordinate collections conservation with the centralized conservation department

 

Manage collections requests from staff, researchers, and all others:

·        Respond to requests for collections information

·        Manage photographic requests

·        Execute and store collection photographs

·        Manage publication requests                            

 

Monitor facilities for proper temperature, humidity, and pest control:

·        Develop expertise in operation of EMS system

·        Take temperature and humidity readings on a regular basis

·        Maintain schedule for monitoring pest control

 

 

The candidate should have a proficiency in and demonstrated knowledge of professional museum policies and procedures, and current registration practices and principles, including: management of collection documentation records (manual and electronic - TMS and/or Re:Discovery database experience a plus); digital collection standards; preservation standards; art handling techniques; and packing and storage standards and procedures for works of art. The candidate should have experience with Photoshop, digital cameras and scanners. Must be extremely accurate, resourceful, detail oriented, self-motivated, and flexible in multi-tasking with ability to analyze and solve problems. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills are critical. The candidate must be computer literate. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team with accuracy and minimal guidance. The candidate should have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Candidate must have the ability to lift at least 25lbs, sit and stand for long periods, work at a computer for an extended time, work with the public in a professional businesslike manner and travel when needed. Candidate must have the ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings as necessary. Candidate must have the ability to visually inspect artwork. Candidate must maintain a valid New Mexico state driver’s license

 

Required Education/Experience: Master’s degree in Museum’s Studies, Art History, History, Anthropology, or related field with five (5) years of registration or collection management experience in a museum.

 

Salary range: $30,534.40 - $42,421 (depending on experience) annually plus health, dental, vision and retirement benefits; full time (40 hours/week) permanent position to be split between two museums.
