SALARY RANGE

: $27,224.07 to $34,745.58 per year STATUS: Regular Full-Time

MUSEUM REGISTRAR

Definition and Distinguishing Characteristics

This is specialized work in managing the permanent and loan collection of the Roswell Museum and Art Center. Work involves the application of a specialized body of knowledge to the maintenance of thorough records, registering and identifying the collection, both the Museum's permanent collection as well as objects on loan. Work extends to responsibility for the storage, moving and overall protection of the collection.

Work is performed in accordance with practices and accepted procedures for Museum operation with the employee expected to exercise considerable independent judgement in interpreting these procedures to each individual item in the collection. The work requires the exercise of independent judgement but within very carefully defined areas. The work requires the application of knowledges that require considerable preemployment education and training. Work is performed under the general direction of the Museum Director and may involve immediate supervision of subordinate Registrar classes. Work is reviewed primarily in terms of accuracy, timeliness with which items are registered and the timeliness of the moving of objects.

Typical Examples of Work Performed

Develops and maintains a computerized recordkeeping system for identifying all items received by the Museum, either on loan or as part of the permanent collection.

Develops and maintains object history files and records sufficient information for permanent identification and to assist in the maintenance of the historical perspective on the object.

Administers insurance coverage for the Museum's collection.

Implements Museum loan arrangements, maintains records on all short-term and long-term loan objects in the collection, maintains records on objects on loan to other museums or exhibits.

Directs and participates in the storage and moving of Museum objects.

Develops proposals for outside professional conservatory work, administers and participates in the approval of conservatory plans.

May drive City vehicles.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of museum registration and recordkeeping principles and practices.

Knowledge of Art History with special emphasis on local Southwest artists preferred.

Some knowledge of American History and Anthropology, especially as it applies to Americans native to the Southwest, Mexican Americans and Spanish Americans preferred.

Knowledge of art conservation techniques and practices.

Ability to work independently in an efficient and effective manner.

Ability to plan and schedule work and to set priorities.

An appreciation of art, some artistic skill and the ability to critically evaluate art objects.

Ability to drive City vehicles safely and efficiently.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.

Minimum Requirements of Education and Experience

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in American History, Art History or related field.

Two years' responsible registrar experience working for an art museum comparable to the Roswell Museum and Art Center.

Considerable experience in the use of personal computers. Familiarity with MS-DOS and IBM computers preferred.

Necessary Special Qualification

Must possess and maintain a valid Class D driver's license issued by the State of New Mexico and have a satisfactory driving record.

Necessary Special Requirements

Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary.
