Hi all -

I'm seeking some advice on and examples of university student-run art
galleries. I am the staff advisor for a student-run gallery at a public
university that has 2 other professional art galleries. The university is
looking at the structure/hierarchy of these galleries. The student-run
gallery and one of the professional galleries is under the student union
while the other is under student affairs. Right now, the student-run
gallery does not interact with the professional gallery in the same
department. Formerly, the staff advisor reported to the gallery's director,
but it was brought out from it because of supervisory reasons. One of the
things we struggle with is that my supervisor does not have a background in
the visual arts/gallery, which makes it difficult when I have professional
questions (Note: I am also the staff advisor for the film group).

Does your university have a student-run gallery (with a staff advisor)?
Where does the gallery fall in the university hierarchy? What pros/cons do
you see if the student-run gallery is not brought back under the
professional gallery?

Thanks,
Sarah
