Heritage Events Internship

Valence House Museum

London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

Valence House Museum reopened in 2010 following a major HLF redevelopment project. Based in Dagenham, the Museum details the history of the local area. The Museum has recently been described as “one of the best local history museums in Greater London”.

Summary of role

Valence House Museum seeks a creative and motivated intern to devise and deliver public events that are connected with local history.  Whilst liaising with the Events Officer based at Eastbury Manor House, Barking, the candidate will work independently to devise a wide ranging programme of creative events that will expand the Museum’s visitor base, whilst attracting income. These events will vary in size, from children’s activity workshops (c20 visitors) to popular annual events (c3000+ visitors). They will also be responsible for the effective marketing of these events.

The internship will commence immediately and will finish in December 2012, with the possibility of an extension.  The successful candidate will be expected to commit to a normal working day (9:00 – 17:00), with a minimum of 3 days per week. Some Saturday and evening working will be required.

There is no remuneration for this position, although travelling expenses will be paid to those travelling within the Greater London area.

Candidates should have experience of arranging/managing public events, and experience of working within the Heritage field is preferable. They must be motivated, have good organisational skills, be able to meet strict deadlines, and work well under self direction. They must have good people skills and be good at negotiation. The candidate should have experience or knowledge of working within restricted budgets. Basic computer skills are essential, although all training will be provided.

The internship is intended to benefit both VHM and the intern. This will be a very “hands-on” internship where candidates will be gaining practical and valuable skills for a future career in the Heritage Events field.

Closing date for applications is 5pm 20th December 2011.
