Here at Dallas Heritage Village (we have about 30 buildings), we’re planning and preparing for our 40th Candlelight event.  As part of this anniversary, we’re combing through our archives and gathering memories from visitors, volunteers, staff, and others.  I’m also in the midst of preparing a lecture on this event, setting the changes this event has seen over the years in the context of the larger changes in the field.

One key element for our event has always been community involvement.  Community groups decorate the buildings (some groups have been doing the same building for decades), and we also have lots of local groups perform (again, many do this year after year).

So, my question to all of you:

Do you  hold a similar event at your institution?  A holiday event with strong community involvement?  (I’m not looking for something that is solely staff-arranged or programmed solely by staff).

If so, when did this event start?

What are some of the key changes you’ve seen in your event over the years?

Just trying to fit our story into the bigger picture—I know there have to be other institutions that have certain event traditions, though I also know that 40 years for an event is pretty special.

Thanks!

Melissa
