“Making Collections Meaningful” by Jean Svadlenak

In a world where everyone is on the go and change is constant, long-term viability and sustainability for museums, archives, and related organizations depends on engaging communities and visitors in meaningful ways. We must focus on what we can do uniquely well and tell those compelling stories that bring our community’s history to life. This year’s keynote address by Jean Svadlenak will suggest ways we can look at collections, discover the fascinating stories they tell, and provide tips for planning exhibits that help visitors connect with their community’s unique story, places, and events.

            Jean Svadlenak brings 35 years of museum experience to her work as a consultant in documenting, preserving, and interpreting community history. Her most recent project is the new exhibition, Americans by Choice: The Story of Immigration & Citizenship in Kansas commissioned by the U.S. District Court at the Robert J. Dole Courthouse in Kansas City, Kansas. Prior to establishing a consulting practice, Jean served as curator, then president at the Kansas City Museum. During her 11-year tenure, she coordinated all curatorial and exhibition activities, and while she was president the museum achieved accreditation from the American Association of Museums.
