I would not recommend simply giving new file paths to pages in the new website. Doing so prevents you from setting up redirects (because presumably you want visitors who have bookmarks to the old site, or come across a link on another website, to arrive at the new site, not the old one). The easiest thing would be to dump the whole old website into another folder (perhaps old/2008-2011).

Of course there isn't a reason it has to be stored online. You can always archive the source files or printed (to pdf) files locally.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for deciding to archive your original web site. Archiving a web site costs little, but provides a history of your institution for scholars in the future. Because of the very small cost, every web page should be maintained for posterity!

I created and maintain several historical web sites, including the ones cited in my signature, at the end of this message.

There is nothing special to archiving a web site. For your new web site, you simply use new names for Internet directories and web pages.

To reuse your index page for the new web site, simply rename your old index page with a new address--perhaps something like: "index2011".

Remember to place a link to your old web pages, perhaps in the "history" or "about" section of your new web site.

Good luck with your new web site and the archiving of your old web site!

Hi all,

We are currently looking to launch a new website but would like to archive the old one. I am wondering if anyone has done this before and how you were able to archive it. Please let me know any suggestions or thoughts on how to do this.

Please email me at [log in to unmask]

Thanks,
