One thing to note - I have managed to locate vacuum bags for some pretty old and obscure models of vacuums online. You might try someplace like https://www.gottahavebags.com/Default.aspx , even if it is just to get enough bags to keep you going till you can get a new vacuum.

Hello Museum L. We've been using an over-the-shoulder style backpack vacuum to clean the stairs in our historic house. We can no longer locate bags for this particular model and are looking into a replacement.
What's your favorite vacuum style or method to vacuum stairs in an historic interior?
