museums that seem to do a lot with a little:
the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto--a lot of enthusiasm for what they have goes a long way in helping them engage with visitors. I never thought I was a shoe person until I visited!
The Toledo Museum of Art is a small museum that seems to really engage with its community through on-site programs, working with schools, a Resource Center for Educators, a partnership with the University of Toledo Department of Art and a newer glass pavilion that celebrates one of the city's key industries (glass)
The Walker Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum each seem able to connect with people on-line in interesting ways. The Walker Art Museum in particular seems to be able to engage a teenage audience...
The Old Jail Art Center is a small museum in Albany, TX, that makes a huge difference in its community--it serves about 2 dozen rural counties and provides art education for local school systems. They just added a long distance learning center in 2009 that seems to be doing interesting, interactive programs.

You should look at the USS Monitor Center at the Mariners’ Museum (Newport News, Virginia).

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] examples of great museums
My board has asked me to create a list of museums that are great examples of cutting edge, relevant, exciting, interactive, not-to-be missed museums. This could also be particular exhibitions in museums. Ideally, these are in the US because we would like to visit them. However, some members of my board are lucky enough to travel internationally so if you know of museums out of the US that are not to be missed we’d like to know about them.
