If a third party lies about an incident, then that third party is to be held responsible for libel, not the person asking concerning the incident.   You are insinuating that I am being slanderous simply for asking about a possible theft in which the first party did, in fact, say a theft of sorts occurred.  Dear me!  If asking about a possible theft when someone has already admitted to it is libel, then I dare to say that the vast majority of the population is in legal trouble!

I'd start by asking all of your board and volunteers to "Like" the page and pass it around to their family and friends. Once you have 25 people you can request a user ID for the page which makes it easier to list on flyers, etc. For example, ours is "hdecm" (has to be at least 5 characters) so all of our flyers have "facebook.com/hdecm" listed at the bottom next to our website address. Next, I asked all of the staff to add it to their email signatures (below - the listserv wouldn't let the jpeg icon thru, but normally it's there) and include it on all flyers they produce. That was a good start and now I'm working on how to continue to increase it. We offer programs for students so I made half-sheet flyers listing our facebook and twitter addresses, which I also have with our handouts at other events as well... I've worked hard on coming up with a social network calendar and I've gotten verbal feedback that people like what I'm doing, I just don't know how to get more people to interact with the page. Here is what I mentioned in that thread. Alas there is no secret formula, and I dare say there is no "average" for Facebook followers. We're a small-to-mid-sized, specialized (firefighting) museum in a Suburb of Chicago. We've been on Fb. about a year and have over 660 "follow/likers". How did we get that many? As with everything, you get out what you put in. About 200+ are personal Facebook "friends" of mine -- that is, people I/we know and/or interact with somewhat routinely, (members of the local business community, friends, local firefighters, etc). Of course the beauty of Fb is that your posts/interactions with me are shared with your friends (who hopefully will want to join) and then their friends will see, and so on -- and so on -- and. . . So I dare saw the first few friends is a lot harder than the next, and the second hundred is easier that the first - and so on . . . (at least up until you've reached the six-degrees of separation, and maxed out all your friends, who know your all your other friends). We also ask/remind everyone leaving the museum, "if you like what you saw - friend us on Facebook to keep in touch. . . " We also have the link clearly posted on EVERY page of our website (I noticed you had it clearly on the front page). Once you GET friends/fans/follow/likers you need to concentrate on keeping them -- and that requires a bit of trial and error and finesse. How much should you post? (daily, weekly?).... What kind of posts? Only things happening at the museum, or things that your follows might find interesting (general-interest historical happenings, or perhaps cultural events at other museums or venues)? .... All these are variables that will be different for each museums (depending on your fans and their demographics). With all this said - we've had great success with Facebook! We've posted a couple (sleepy) events - and the over-sold! We posted "it's cold and snowy outside, but we're open and we're the only ones here - come visit" -- and we had three families come in! Social Media is a fascinating - fun - and frustrating new tool in our marketing toolbox. There are a lot of places offering loads of good information and advice. One of my favorites is TechSoup -- http://techsoup.org -- Search the Learning Center - (lots of great beginner articles) and also the free user forums. I haven't yet worked with a service for this, but there is literature both on the web and in books (such as this site I found: http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/) that helps you think more about what keywords are on your homepage or Facebook page, and what you can do that might just take a little ingenuity to make your museum more marketable and more widely "found" during searching. One method to consider is to stop thinking of your Facebook page as a billboard for announcing events, and to start thinking of it as a parallel museum.  While we have some crossover, our Facebook members and "real" members are different crowds - the Facebook group being mostly people who grew up here in tiny Thomasville, GA but are now scattered across the country.  Try using your page to post original content - images in your collection that are not on exhibit, images of artifacts, scans of documents like letters, newspaper articles, diary pages, etc.  Engage your users - ask them to identify things for you, name who is in pictures, ask them their opinions on things you might try at the museum...you'll be amazed at the information that comes from "crowdsourcing" - and don't batter them for donations, etc.  Once in awhile is ok, but most Facebook users enjoy the "freeness" of the content.  The donations, memberships and sales will come as people come to think of your page as a daily site visit.  All the other things, which are good suggestions - having existing members and board members sign up, putting in web page links, etc., are nice but in the end are meaningless if you're not creating good content to keep the visitor interested..."likes" for "likes sake" is not the goal, the goal is to have an engaged online presence that will be a benefit to your museum...otherwise, someone may "like" your page once, then hide it from their newsfeed if all you're doing is announcing events at a museum hundreds/thousands of miles away.  That's what I do.

If you don't already, also set up a PayPal account so when folks eventually ask about memberships, there will be an easy, online way for folks to donate...and please be sure to visit our Facebook page in the link provided below! :)

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Facebook "Likes"

Hi, Listers--

Anyone have advice on how to obtain Facebook "Likes" for our small, local museum's Facebook page? We're not interested in pursuing advertising through FB, but we would certainly like to increase our FB and website traffic and visibility.

Here's our website:
http://www.haymarketmuseum.org/

Here's our Facebook page:

Your ideas are most welcome. Thanks very much.

I would make it more prominent though. Remind visitors that you're on FB, whether that be by word of mouth or in your publications. Also get involved with other local businesses, museums, historical societies, etc on FB. You'll direct traffic to their pages and vice versa. The most important thing is have a strategy for your FB and other social networking endeavors (that's been talked about on the listserv before). Determine what kind of presence you want to project on FB (or the web in general). Also, make sure you keep up and are engaging on FB. Posting once a week won't make for a interesting feed and messages you do post will get lost. Lastly, don't take FB too seriously. Don't be afraid to post something fun. I've found that silly, fun posts often get the best response from friends. Good luck!
