The Department of Art History and Archaeology at Washington University in St Louis, and the Saint Louis Art Museum are pleased to announce a new 3-year postdoctoral appointment, starting July 1, 2011. 

Postdoctoral Fellow in Islamic Art

Seeking a specialist in Islamic art of any era for a joint teaching-curatorial position. This three-year post doctoral fellowship, starting July 1, 2011, is sponsored by the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Washington University in St. Louis and the Saint Louis Art Museum.  Applicants should have received their PhD degree in 2007 or later.  Each year, the Fellow will split her or his time between these two institutions, teaching two courses and fully participating in campus life during one semester, and then moving for six months to the art museum. Washington University, a major research university, seeks a dynamic teacher and scholar with a broad range of interests in Islamic art and visual culture, whose courses will attract not only art history and art students, but also students from related programs in Arab
ic; in Jewish, Islamic and Near Eastern Studies; and in the Program in Religious Studies. The Fellow will be able to repeat some courses over the course of the fellowship.  The museum seeks a scholar whose expertise complements the strengths of the Saint Louis Art Museum, which has important holdings in Islamic textiles (fabrics and carpets); ceramics from the 10th to 17th centuries, and a small but significant group of manuscripts.  At the museum, the Fellow will develop a plan for cataloguing and installing a selection of the Islamic collection, design an interpretative program for that installation, and finally, install the collection.  Annual stipend will be $50,000 a year, plus benefits, plus some research and travel funds.  To apply please go to jobs.wustl.edu and look up job posting #21179.
