Research Scientist-Postdoctoral Researcher

This position supports the mission of the Chicago Zoological Society and
contributes to innovations in science, education and research through the
implementation of new education research initiatives, Climate Literacy Zoo
Education Network and My Water Footprint, that explores learning outcomes in
free-choice learning environments-- particularly, how interpretation, animal
interactions, websites and other cyber infrastructure can be integrated to
provide scientific information and opportunities for eliciting human behaviors
that have direct environmental conservation implications. Specifically, this
position focuses on the following activities: (i) developing and strengthening
the multidisciplinary partnerships of zoos and universities to promote success
of both projects, (ii) conducting research and coordinating the research
agendas of multiple zoos and universities to understand informal learning
environments in zoos (iii) helping technical teams to build prototypes of
electronic media, such as websites, virtual social networks, and experimenting
with such architectures, (iv) working with zoo practitioners to integrate
education research into practical application at zoos, and (v) advancing
informal science education research by developing scientific publications,
media presence, and fundraising proposals.
Responsibilities:
Performs original and objective research that explores learning principles of
informal science education in large cultural institutions, such as zoos,
museums, or botanic gardens. Utilizes electronic websites, social media and
dedicated electronic tools to advance informal science education and extend
science programs beyond the experiential visit to the zoo. Works with the
Senior VP of Conservation, Education and Training and CET Group managers to
develop and implement departmental operating plans, goals, and budgets.
Regularly reviews budgets pertinent to project operations and has the ability
to track multiple grants with federal and private funding agencies, to assure a
balanced budget and timely project deliverables. Generates revenue and program
support through grants and other means in coordination with the CZS
institutional Development team. Interacts regularly with a team of managers and
education staff to assure activities, communications, and education messages
are coordinated, integrated, and proceeding in accordance with established
plans and timeframes. Represents the CET Group and the institution externally,
works with existing partnerships with individuals, organizations, and community
groups, and promotes the interests of the organization in a professional and
well-informed manner. Helps to establish a high profile for the role of
informal science education within the zoo industry, academia, and the wider
community. Other related duties as assigned to achieve established goals and
objectives.
Requirements:
Ph.D. degree or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required
in Education, Psychology, Learning Technologies, Cognitive Studies, Environmental
Studies, or related field required. Three (3) years experience designing and
conducting informal science education studies in free-choice learning
environments required. Three (3) years experience using relevant cyber tools
(websites, virtual social medial, video games, and/or dedicated e-tools) in
extending informal science education required. Knowledge of some or all of
these disciplines: experimental design, statistical methods for social
research, web architecture, electronic or distance learning tools, data
processing, informal science education and/or zoo interpretation preferred.
Excellent project management skills. Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary
research teams within complex partnerships with multiple agendas and levels of
interest, with a tight focus on timely project deliverables and a disciplined
scientific output. Must be able to work effectively with others, including
colleagues in other zoos, academic partners and with the CZS research and
education team. Excellent scientific writing ability, with proven track record
of output in scientific, popular articles, and funding proposals highly
preferred. Articulate; excellent communication and public speaking skills.
Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain a strong rapport
and positive relationships with all levels of staff, within and outside the
organization. Must be flexible, cooperative, and able to adapt easily to
shifting priorities. Must be able to maintain the confidentiality of privileged
information. Strong interest and commitment to environmental conservation and
the natural world. Must be strategic in his/her orientation, proactive,
persistent, and helpful. Strong organizational skills, eyes for detail and
accuracy, and ability to meet deadlines. Valid driver’s license required.
Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois license within 90 days of
hire. Valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. Spanish
fluency a plus, but not required. The candidate must be willing to be located
at the Society’s headquarters offices in the greater Chicago area and
maintain an active domestic travel schedule, with occasional international
travel. Incumbent is expected to represent the Society in a professional manner
at all times. This is postdoctoral research position supported by several
two-year grants that serve as a jumping board for a long-term institutional
commitment to climate change education and informal science education.
