ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PUBLIC HISTORY/ MUSEUM STUDIES

DESCRIPTION & REQUIREMENTS
Tusculum College invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Public History/Museum Studies beginning August 2011. The position involves a 60% teaching load (approximately four courses a year) in Tusculum's undergraduate Museum Studies major. The successful candidate will also serve as Coordinator of the Museum Studies program, which involves advising, internship coordination, and special project oversight. The position will also involve participation in the Museums of Tusculum College, including in activities such as exhibit development and design, managing research requests, grant writing, and community outreach. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Public History or a Ph.D. in History with a graduate degree in Public History or commensurate work experience in public history, museum management, or museology. ABD candidates will also be considered. Applicants should also demonstrate the capacity for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. Review of applications will begin on January 28 and will continue until the position is filled.

Tusculum College operates two on-campus museums. The Doak House Museum, home of the College's co-founder, hosts over 10,000 school children a year and focuses its interpretation on the history of education, as well as on the social and religious history of the period. The President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library is located in the "Old College." This 1841 academic building houses personal artifacts of the Johnson family and Andrew Johnson's personal library. Old College also serves as the repository for the College archives. Selected artifacts from the collections are kept on exhibition in the museums. The campus is also home to the Tusculum Historic District which features ten structures on the National Register of Historic Places.
