The
Library of Virginia is pleased to announce that its new exhibition, Union or
Secession: Virginians Decide, is open. The exhibition examines what
Virginians thought as the secession crisis unfolded during the winter of
1860-1861.
That
Virginia would secede from the United States was by no means a foregone
conclusion. Using correspondence, newspapers, and other archival materials,
Union or Secession explores how Virginians coped with the economic and
political uncertainty created by the secession of states from the Lower
South and how and why the Virginia Convention of 1861 shifted from a unionist
convention to one favoring secession.
Union or Secession: Virginians Decide continues through
October 29, 2011. An extensive educational Web site complements the
exhibition (http://www.virginiamemory.com/online_classroom/union_or_secession/).
The ceremonial Ordinance of Secession, penned by William Flegenheimer, a noted
Richmond calligrapher, and signed by delegates in June 1861, will be on view
four times during 2011. Please visit the Library's Web site, www.lva.virginia.gov, for more
information.
