CURATOR OF COLLECTIONS AND EXHIBITIONS

VERO BEACH MUSEUM OF ART

Working closely with the Museum Director, the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions has primary responsibility for the development, implementation and interpretation of the permanent collection, the development of temporary exhibitions and management of the exhibition schedule and departmental budget.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Collections

 

1.                  Working with the Registrar, update the Museum’s Acquisition and Collection Policy and Long-Range Conservation Plan as appropriate for Board approval

2.                  Encourage gifts from collectors to achieve the Museum’s collection goals

3.                  Guide with Director the Athena Society in the selection of artworks for the permanent collection

4.                  Be knowledgeable and make recommendations on all contracts relating to long term loans, insurance, shipping, etc.

5.                  Assist development efforts to obtain funds for the collection from private and public sources

6.                  Be knowledgeable of and practice acceptable standards of managing and handling of objects and conservation practices

7.                  Manage affairs of and make presentations to Collection Committee

 

Exhibitions

 

1.                  Update the Museum’s Exhibition Policy as appropriate for Board approval

2.                  Develop and organize temporary exhibitions in addition to researching and obtaining exhibitions from various sources, i.e. museums, collectors, traveling exhibition services, etc.

3.                  Supervise design and installation of exhibitions

4.                  Oversee all department correspondence including contracts, letters of agreement with artists, donors, lenders, vendors, services, etc., which are to be signed by the Director

5.                  Working with the Registrar, obtain all information relating to temporary exhibitions, i.e. lender designations, fees, insurance value, promotional material, insurance, shipping and handling requirement, scheduling details, file preparation maintenance, object descriptions and any other special considerations and information

6.                  Supervise and coordinate research on artists featured in exhibitions

7.                  Supervise and coordinate research on Florida artists

8.                  Obtain, organize and/or compose all information for publications and public relations effort including a graphic identity for each exhibition

9.                  Maintain an archive on all exhibition catalogues, invitations, etc.

10.              Assist development efforts to obtain funds for exhibitions from both private and public sources

11.              Work with the Education Department on docent training and exhibition interpretation plans for each exhibition

12.              Manage affairs of and make presentations to the Exhibition Committee

 

Administration

 

1.                  Schedule and organize meetings for the Collection Committee and the Exhibition Committee.  Provide agenda, minutes from previous meetings and presentation materials

2.                  Provide reports to Board of Trustees and presentation of relevant material and/or objects

3.                  Attend and participate in Department Head, staff meetings, exhibition planning meetings, and meetings with Director of Education

4.                  Maintain good working knowledge of the Museum’s policies, procedures, educational practices and ideologies

5.                  Be knowledgeable of and practices the AAM Code of Ethics

6.                  Perform other duties deemed appropriate by the Executive Director

7.                  Develop and manage departmental budget

 

Functional Relationships:

 

Reports to the Executive Director.  Works closely with the Executive Director, Registrar, Assistant to the Executive Director, Finance Manager, Director of Development, Director of Education, Director of Security and Technical Services and Director of Facilities.  Supervises in conjunction with the Registrar, the Preparator and Conservator.  This position is classified as Exempt.   

 

Qualifications:

 

M.A. Degree (in fine art, art history or museum studies); a minimum of five (5) years of curatorial experience; knowledge of professional museum practices; effective written and oral communications skills; good management and organizational skills; ability to work with others in a fast paced environment.
