Job Description: Registrar

 

Museum of the Moving Image seeks a Registrar to be responsible for the proper physical care, movement, and documentation of all objects in its collection. The collection comprises over 130,000 objects illustrating all aspects of the production, promotion, and exhibition of movies, television, and digital entertainment, from the inception of motion pictures at the turn of the twentieth century to the present day. This is a full-time exempt position.

 

Qualified candidates should have at least three years of experience working in a museum registration department, an understanding of the legal and ethical aspects of collecting, preserving, borrowing, and exhibiting works of art and material culture, and experience working with collections and digital asset management systems.

 

Responsibilities include:

• Oversee the proper and appropriate physical housing, packing, and transport  of all objects in the collection and on loan to the Museum;
• Oversee proper installation, care, maintenance, and rotation of objects in the Museum’s core exhibition, Behind the Screen, and in all changing exhibitions;
• Compile, complete, and maintain legal documents and agreements, locations systems, histories of use, condition reports, physical histories, and all electronic documentation of objects in the collection and on loan to the Museum;
• Process new acquisitions, incoming and outgoing loans, and deaccessions;
• Work with outside conservators when required for artifact and document treatment;
• Oversee periodic inventories of collections storage facilities, including  overseeing the process of transferring the Museum’s offsite collections holdings, as well as artifacts in the existing on-site facility, into our new state-of-the-art onsite facility in 2011-12;
• Serve on the Museum’s Collection Committee and assist with the development, modification, evaluation, and implementation of Collection Department policies and procedures.

 

Qualifications:

• B.A. required, advanced degree in History, Film/Media Studies, Library Science, Museum Studies, or a related field a plus;
• Previous registration experience required;
• Strong interest in new media and innovative technology;
• Energetic, flexible attitude, and strong writing and verbal communication skills.
