Our museums are closed to drop
in visitors in January, February and March – but take reserved groups at those
times.
It’s a bit easier for us to
manage this, since our offices are in a different location than the sites,
which are only staffed when they are open.
This was based on the costs of
staffing for those months compared to the number of visitors. The sites are
not compatible with winter touring.

We’ve tried various things in both January and August (for
Texans, heat is just as big a concern!). Several years ago, we started by
reducing our operating hours. Then we kept our hours the same, but didn’t
have our interpretative staff on the grounds (and charged a reduced
admission). In 2009, we closed completely in both January and
August. Financially, it just didn’t make sense for us to be open, and no
matter what we did, people just don’t want to learn about history if it’s 105
degrees! We do sometimes get people that wander in, and these months are
difficult for our front-line, part time staff. However, it’s a big relief
for our administrative staff and also gets a chance for us to catch up on
bigger projects—whether it’s building maintenance or program development.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] closed in Jan?
Hello all-
I would like some informal feedback regarding how many
historic house museums represented here are closed or open by appointment only
during the month of January. I am putting together a recommendation that we do
this to take to the higher ups.
Thanks in advance-
