Background: The Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) is a small museum which is growing rapidly.  The longtime home of the great jazz musician Louis Armstrong is today a National Historic Landmark and a New York City landmark visited by people from all over the world. The museum also administers the world's largest collection of research materials devoted to a jazz musician.  The museum has received a number of awards, including New York City's "Mayor's Award for Arts & Culture."  In 2012, the museum will open a new $15 million Visitors Center.  More about the museum at www.louisarmstronghouse.org.

Summary: The Development Officer plans and administers the fundraising activities of the Louis Armstrong House Museum.

Reports to and works closely with: Director, Louis Armstrong House Museum.

Supervises: Part-time employees, interns, and volunteers.

Duties include:
1.        Identify, research, and cultivate prospective funders (e.g., government agencies, foundations, individuals)
2.        Create and submit grant proposals and reports.
3.        Solicit major gifts.
4.        Administer membership program.
5.        Plan and implement fundraising special events.
6.        Attend outside receptions, concerts, lectures, and other cultivation events.
7.        Assist if needed with daily operations and public programs.
8.        Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
1.        Bachelor's degree.
2.        Two years full-time experience in non-profit development.
3.        Demonstrated success in soliciting grants and major gifts.
4.        Excellent writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills.

Highly Desired:
1.        Graduate degree in related discipline.
2.        Knowledge of jazz history.
3.        At least two years professional employment in a museum.
4.        Fluency in Spanish and English.

Salary: $55,602 - $57,790 annually.  Benefits.

Hours: 35 hours per week to be scheduled Monday-Sunday, 9 AM – 6 PM.  Occasional evening and weekend events.
