Historic Jamestowne Director of Public Programs and Operations:  Preservation Virginia seeks a highly motivated individual to develop public programming and oversee day-to-day operations at Historic Jamestowne—America’s Birthplace.  The individual will supervise public programming, retail, food and beverage operations, maintenance/ grounds staff, volunteers, and the Voorhees Archaearium.   The position will also act as a liaison to the National Park Service, partner organizations and the wider community. The successful candidate will be a member of the senior management team and support building a sustainable program for the next decade.  Consistent with the agreement between Preservation Virginia (PV) and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (CWF) by which CWF has taken on management responsibilities for Historic Jamestowne, he or she will report directly to CWF’s vice president of research and historical interpretation.

 

Qualifications:  Minimum of five years demonstrated management, partnership and communication skills, and experience in cultural/museum or related field.

Preference will be given to those with experience in building public programming and community relations. A familiarity with colonial Virginia history an advantage. Masters in education, history or historic preservation preferred.

Duties of the position include:

 

         Participating in the senior management team responsible for all aspects of the management of Historic Jamestowne—programmatic, financial, and operational—

in accordance with the strategic plan for Historic Jamestowne.

 

         Implementation of the strategic plan as it pertains to public programming, retail, site operations, and the Voorhees Archaearium. 

 

         Development of educational and public programs at Historic Jamestowne under the direction of CWF’s vice president of research and historical interpretation and in coordination with the Director of Archaeological Research and Interpretation at Historic Jamestowne and other appropriate staff that meets the mission and vision of the strategic plan.

 

         Leading the development of a website and other educational materials devoted to connecting the history of Jamestown to other historic sites in the Historic Triangle and promoting the regional, national, and international significance of Jamestown

 

         Participating in the initiative, led by CWF, to seek recognition of Historic Jamestowne as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

         Cooperating with CWF’s marketing and promotional activities for Historic Jamestowne and coordinating media opportunities on site.

 

         Monitoring monthly levels of visitation, visitor demographics, and guest satisfaction.

 

         Serving as the principal liaison with the National Park Service (NPS) and other partner organizations as the on-site representative of CWF and PV and ensuring timely and appropriate communications. 

 

         Cooperating with CWF’s hospitality and products divisions in identifying opportunities for increasing revenue in the areas of retail, food service, and facility rentals.

 

         Supervising PV staff and volunteers in the areas of administration, public programming, retail, and maintenance/ grounds staff.
