The suffrage movement had a history of interacting with women laborers; indeed one of the strongest arguments for woman suffrage came from labor women hoping to improve pay and working conditions. Susan B. Anthony, through her paper The Revolution helped organize the Working Women's Association. The Women's Trade Union League campaigned for suffrage among men and women workers. Rose Schneiderman, a labor leader during the suffrage campaign, said in 1912, "what the woman who labors wants is the right to live, not simply exist - the right to life as the rich woman has the right to life, and the sun and music and art. You have nothing that the humblest worker has not a right to have also. The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too. Help, you women of privilege, give her the ballot to fight with." Knowing the sway they would have on the president and the public, Alice Paul frequently incorporated women labor unions in her pageants, including the March 3, 1913 parade, and in deputations to President Wilson. On February 18, 1917, labor women held a special picket of the White House. Representing office and factory workers from nearby states, the women believed the ballot was "a means of sel-defense in industry." Today the National Woman's Party salutes the Coalition of Labor Union Women, The AFL-CIO, Change to Win, and the ancestors of the unions that helped women gain the right to vote. Happy Labor Day!
