I recently completed a collections internship at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History (Spring Break 2010). I assisted the lead intern advisor by cataloging, sorting and storing the museum’s collection of maps in the Botany and Mammals departments. I also scanned and edited maps in Adobe Photoshop to create a digital collection that will be available to the public within the year. Prior to scanning the maps, the intern advisor had taken digital photos of each map. Although the photos are still on file, the scanned versions will allow researchers the opportunity to zoom in and read each town/city/handwritten notes on the maps. The scanner I used was a Graphtec SK200 36”. If you are interested in learning more about this project, I'm sure the intern advisor I worked for, James Harle ([log in to unmask]), would be able to answer your questions.
