 Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery  

This course thoroughly addresses the process of “risk management” by examining in detail how to prepare for and respond to disaster.

Design and Construction of Mounts for Exhibits

This course includes theory and hands-on practicum which includes techniques for braising metals, cutting/bending/gluing acrylics for the use of various archival barrier materials, and for making fabric covered ethafoam forms.

Making Storage Boxes, Mounts and Enclosures

Topics include storage design and layout, security, shelving/racking, low- to no-cost upgrades, and storage mounts/enclosures.

Care of Metal Artifacts

Topics covered in this course include the properties/identification of metals, common corrosion products, cleaning/stabilizing corroded objects, environments that cause corrosion, proper handling, hazards, choosing safe storage/display materials, and treatment options.

Integrated Pest Management

This course focuses on behavior- and facility-oriented methods of conducting integrated pest management, with heavy emphasis on low-chemical, practical solutions.

The Museum Environment

This course provides an in-depth study of the monitoring and control of the museum environment, and an introduction to the effects of the effects on the organic and inorganic materials of museum artifacts. Lab and lecture sessions.

Computer Software for Collections Management

This course focuses on the process of artifact cataloguing and maintenance of collections records utilizing a computer database system.

Preparing Works of Art on Paper for Storage, Loan and Exhibition

Hands on experience – this course focuses on museum matting for exhibitions and loans. Learn matting and hinging techniques with emphasis on special conservation and aesthetic needs of exhibition matting and framing.

Basic Traditional Sewing Skills

This course will empower you to manage sewing projects that usually must be outsourced.

Database Design for Collections Management

This course will familiarize students with the design and creation of a collections database. Using an inexpensive and easy to use software program, students work with the instructor to create an actual working database that can be used to organize and track collections objects.

Frames for Exhibits: Low Cost Repair and Reuse

Participants will learn to cast pieces for repairs, fix small amounts of damage with wax and other materials, apply design elements, do light carving, and a variety of other techniques in repairing a frame or making a period replica.

Hazards of Heavy Metals in Collections

Detection strategies, testing methodologies, safe handling guidelines, and personal protective equipment (PPE) will be examined. Safe storage and transport of contaminated objects will also be  discussed.
