DESCRIPTION:
The 1804
Betts House, the oldest brick house in Ohio, interprets the history of
Cincinnati through exhibits and programs on the built environment
(architecture, historic preservation, building trades and materials, and construction
techniques).
The Betts House is preparing an exhibit on
the bicentennial of the New Madrid Earthquakes for 2011. Our 205 year old house
is one of the few remaining survivors of the earthquakes and as such, has a
unique position in this important yet often forgotten episode of history. Our
exhibit will cover three areas: geology, history, and the effect of earthquakes
on historic and modern building technologies.
The intern will conduct research for the
history section of the exhibit by looking for primary sources and materials.
The intern will prepare a bibliography, make copies where appropriate, and
prepare some draft text for the exhibit
The intern will receive an orientation on
local resources and will research independently and meet weekly with staff to
review their progress. The intern will also be able to experience day to day
operations of the facility learning first-hand the variety of roles and
responsibilities of museum professionals.
This internship is funded, in part, by the
American Association of State and Local History Alderson Internship program.
