There is not much compromise in getting a canon 5d mkII.  We have started using them to shoot part of Feature movies and its plenty good enough for publication purposes up to 16x20 prints.   The Camera cost less then $2k and uses standard Canon lenses.   If you already have existing Nikon equipment then just look at the nikon pro cameras that are in the same price range.   There pretty much is no compromise I can see for a museum with these cameras.

Travis' points are all useful, especially about camera lenses and the camera body that will accept them. You may want to consider further the video function(s) you anticipate. In the long-run, it may be better to have two 'devices', each being able to do the job you want it to do, properly. A 'compromise' choice is often found inadequate down the road.
