Care Intern
Description
Purpose: To gain general
knowledge of museum registration and how the Church History Museum aligns itself
with the larger mission of the Church History Department of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Duration: 3months, 40 hours
per week beginning June 1st, 2010
Responsibilities

Inventory
Objective: Interns will
observe and learn three main points about maintaining a museum collection: 1)
collection development by Curatorial staff, 2) transfer of objects to the
museum and 3) physical care of objects in the Museum.

Creation of Acquisition records for items new to
the collection
ü
Observation of Acquisitions Board Meetings
ü
Cataloging and numbering recent acquisitions
ü
Photography of new collections
Objective: Interns will identify and research
possible objects for removal from the collection prior to proposed movement of
the annex. This segment will include submitting a proposal to the Acquisitions
Board.

Preparing proposal report to the deaccession
committee

Updating electronic and paper records
Segment 3- Inventory This
segment will familiarize the intern with the need to regularly monitor
collections storage and display areas.
Objective: Complete an
inventory of a segment of the collection

Print up an object list
ü
Verify locations of objects, while noting
changes in condition and deficiencies in catalog
ü
Update locations and object information in HMMS
ü
Notify conservation of problems, rehouse items
if needed
ü
Resolve problem records
Segment 4- Rehousing This
segment will focus on the movement and rehousing of existing collections
Objective: Assisting in the
protection and movement of predetermined collections during Physical Facilities
Improvements to Museum storage

Tasks:

Verify locations of objects, while noting
changes in condition and deficiencies in catalog
ü
Update housing materials
ü
Update locations and object information in HMMS
ü
Identify materials in danger of damage and
implement plan to prevent damage during storage painting
Qualifications
·
Currently
in a degree program and completed at least three years of undergraduate work
in any of the following field: museum studies, art, art history, history,
archaeology or anthropology or a college graduate within the last year in one
of these field with plans to attend graduate school.

Must
have excellent writing and editing skills
·
Must
be proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
·
Excellent
communication and interpersonal skills; must work well in a team environment
·
Pro-active
problem-solver, eager to contribute, creative thinker, uninhibited and willing
to share ideas and participate in discussions; detail-oriented
·
Member
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and worthy to hold a Temple
