The Qatar Museums Authority (http://www.qma.com.qa) unites and focuses the efforts of all museums in the State of Qatar for the acquisition, preservation, and interpretation of collections and monuments held in trust for the Qatari people, and shared with the world at large.  The Qatar Museums Authority provides the leadership and accountability necessary for the development of a strong and growing system of 21st century national museums, and an effective system for protecting, preserving and interpreting historic sites and monuments.

The new National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ), currently under development, will represent the history, heritage, and culture of Qatar, enhancing and "emitting" understanding through exhibitions, education, cultural site visits, and technology-based programming for the nation, the region and the world. Job Title: CONSULTING REGISTRAR

Responsible For: ASSISTANT REGISTRARS, COLLECTIONS TECHNICIANS AND INTERNS

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Consulting Registrar is a full-time, two-year appointment.  Strong preference will be given to candidates bilingual in Arabic and English, however this should not discourage other candidates from applying.  This position will play a vital role in the development of a professional Registration and Collections Management Department, as well as in the documentation and management of the collections selected for exhibition in the new National Museum of Qatar.  Serving as a role-model for best practices in registration and collections management, the Consulting Registrar will work with a Qatari team in the creation and maintenance of object records (paper and electronic), including acquisition, accession, provenance, condition, location, and other records.  S/he will participate in the routine care and maintenance of storage, carry out routine collections inventories, facilitate access to the collections, help ensure the security of the collection, and execute loans.  Along with other members of the department, the successful candidate will work with conservators, curators, and exhibition design and development staff and consultants in managing various daily activities as the NMoQ moves towards opening.  The Consulting Registrar will manage and assist in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

*Bachelor of Arts degree in art history, anthropology, museum studies, or closely related field, with a minimum of five years experience; Master of Arts degree preferred.
*Strong preference will be given to candidates who are bi-lingual in Arabic and English, although other candidates should not be discouraged from applying.
*Demonstrated record of progressively responsible experience in registration and collections management, including working with exhibit design and development teams, conservators, and curators, as well as managing loans.
*Experience training and managing teams of professional staff and interns, and communicating your broad knowledge of professional museum principles, practices, and procedures in collections management.
*Experience with collection management databases, cataloging standards, and controlled vocabularies.  Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and KeEMU is preferred, but not required.
*Must be technically literate, including experience with digital photography and the processing and management of digital media.
*Excellent written, communication and presentation skills; ability to problem solve and work independently.
