Behind the Scenes of a Great Museum
Spring Break Museum Practicum

March 8 -11, 2010

Located on a 66-acre estate on Sarasota Bay, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art is the State Art Museum of Florida. The Museum of Art offers 21 galleries of European paintings as well as Cypriot antiquities, Asian Art, American paintings, and contemporary art. The campus also includes Cą d'Zan, the Ringling historic mansion; the Circus Museum; the Tibbals Learning Center; and The Historic Asolo Theater. As a division of Florida State University, the Ringling estate is one of the largest museum/university complexes in the nation and with its location on the edge of Sarasota Bay just a few miles from world-class beaches; it serves as an ideal location for an educational spring break experience.

Through a variety of interactive formats, attendees will get hands-on knowledge of Museum operations from Ringling staff and use the Museum's collection as a basis for learning. Participants will attend tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions, the Cą d'Zan Mansion, and the two circus museums. Sample topics include the history of museums, curatorial and collections management, planning exhibitions, and the business of museums.

The practicum is geared toward upper-division undergraduate students, but all are welcome to attend.
