Information
Blaffer
Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, is an internationally
renowned museum showcasing innovative contemporary art, and Art Focus, the
museum’s education program, enriches the campus and the city’s
cultural life.
The
guiding philosophy of Art Focus is to maximize our impact upon key identified
communities to build a dynamic, sustainable forum for life- long
learning. To accomplish this, Art Focus uses two strategies:
Art Focus presents a unified
philosophical whole that is based on fully integrating art into our
participants’ lives. Programs include two for-credit internship
courses and an accompanying a mentorship program; an extensive guided tour
program offered to groups of all ages and interests; an accompanying in-depth
docent program for arts educators and advanced university students; the Young
Artist Apprenticeship Program, a nationally recognized youth arts workshop for
teens; and Summer Arts, an art-making camp for youth. Public programs are
developed with each exhibition and often are multi-disciplinary and
collaborative.
Our goals is to
engage the imaginations of K-12 students visiting the museum, to give tools to
high school students that enable participants to further their educations and
expand their worldview, to inspire intellectual curiosity and achievement in
university students, to arm future arts professionals skills with critical
skills and knowledge of museum practices, and to give those professionals the
opportunity to mentor students. Above all, we strive to demonstrate the
relevance and power of visual art in all of our lives.
