would your police department and/or insurance company people help? Barbara Hass, retired librarian In a message dated 9/28/2009 1:05:18 P.M. We use a safe that is fireproof (to a certain temperature) to hold our guns that will fit; at least two or three are much too long, one nearing about 8'. From a firearms owner's standpoint, look at the ones that have a keypad or tumble style lock. In my opinion they are more secure and tend to be heavy enough where someone can't tamper with them. You may be able to find a safe that can hold all of the longarms with enough room for a few pieces of jewelry, but if you have a large number of pistols, you may need to have someone customize interior shelving in another safe altogether. Right now my museum has what I would call a metal utility cabinet that houses the rifles/shotguns in our gun collection that is secured with a padlock that has been added on. This cabinet holds about 40 guns, with the remainder of our handguns (not sure of how many at this point) in a locked storage room. I do not feel that these provide adequate storage/security as the cabinet is located in a hallway, that is supposed to be limited to staff only, but this isn't always the case. I'd like to get a more secured storage facility for these artifacts that would be fire proof and would also be able to store some of our valuable jewelry, coins, etc. I've been looking at gun safes online, but wondered if anybody has a vendor they've worked with, suggestions for types of safes, etc. Thanks, Julie Julie Blood Collections and Exhibits Manager San Joaquin County Historical Society & Museum P.
