Daniel,

Much depends on the shard size of the "dust". It would be hard to imagine that an Hvac system would pull anything more than 1 micron in size off the floor and into the air.

You have a large and very capable staff of conservators there at the Musuems of New Mexico - what do they say?

Cheers!
Dave

Does anyone have experience with installing broken glass?  We have a piece comprised of broken shards of glass “dumped” on the floor from hoppers.  The “dumping” only takes place during installation and is part of the artist’s intent.  One of our many concerns is glass dust getting kicked up in the gallery and into the HVAC air returns.  There would be no other artwork in the gallery at the time of installation.  We’ve discussed tenting the immediate installation area and/or covering the air returns (not ideal).  Any suggestions from actual experience would be greatly appreciated.
