The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, is pleased to offer distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, art galleries, cultural institutions, heritage sites and related organizations. Courses are designed to address core competencies and emerging needs of the sector and are taught by recognized leading professionals.

 

Our distance learning courses enable you to learn flexibly, either at home or in your workplace, at times best suited to your learning needs.  You interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond in stimulating learning activities and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community.

Museum Principles and Practices I: Community, Curatorship and Collections (HA 486A)

Strengthen your understanding of museums through a study of core functions, purposes and practices, and the ways in which museums share knowledge through preservation, collections, curatorship and research.

 

Heritage Resource Management (HA 487A)

September 14 – December 20, 2009

Expand your understanding of the nature and value of heritage resources, management approaches, frameworks for conservation and preservation, and planning processes that help ensure their sustainability.

 

Building Sustainable Community Relationships (HA 488S)

September 14 – December 20, 2009

Reconsider your traditional role as cultural worker and identify new ways of relating to your community.  This course encourages you to expand your vision outward, beyond the familiar, to include global trends that are affecting society today. Strengthen your ability to initiate, build and sustain inclusive and mutually beneficial relationships within your communities. Develop new skills in community mapping, collaboration, and incorporating inclusive cultural perspectives.

Public Programming (HA 488G)

September 9 – December 20, 2009

Examine the critical roles of interpretation and public programming as museums and heritage organizations engage their communities in meaningful and long-lasting ways.

Instructor: Candace Matelic, PhD is a consultant focusing on organizational development and museum interpretation

 

Curatorship: Contemporary Perspectives (HA 488J)

September 14 – December 20, 2009

Explore the contemporary role of the curator, along with collections and acquisitions policies, object-oriented research methods, documen­tation analysis, information management, and the communication of research through exhibitions and public programs.
