We honor four volunteers per year by featuring a story about them in our quarterly newsletter, and at our annual volunteer party we give ALL volunteers a certificate in appreciation of the number of hours that they worked that year. We have joke prizes for things like most unusual visitor experience, or our “Just Say Yes!” award for the strangest thing a volunteer was asked to do. Then, we have the option of a  lifetime achievement award which we award only when we feel that there is an appropriate honoree. (“We” is our Volunteer Steering Committee, together with the staff.) With that comes a wall plaque and a story in the newsletter.

A museum I volunteered with during college had a banquet every year that honored all of their volunteers for the work that they had done regardless of what the work was or how many hours they were able to contribute.  I don’t remember specific volunteers being singled out though.
