Bill,

I don't have an answer as to whether or not you should indicate that you would like a permanent position with the institution you're currently volunteering at, but I do have some suggestions about contacting employers. Generally, unless there are special circumstances, I would say that you should only contact once after the initial application. Make sure that the application and resume you are submitting are the best possible representations of yourself, then contact once to thank them for the opportunity; your resume and politeness will speak for itself. Then, if you are selected for an interview, make sure to send a thank you note or e-mail, and make it clear that even if you do not get the current position, you would love to be considered for others in the future.

Hello,

Being a recent graduate and also one is struggling to find more full-time employment, I have been out of the job search. I have a few ethical questions....

First I am a volunteer at an institution in PIttsburgh and would like to be considered for future employment. Is it ethical to tell them that I would like to be considered for future employment? I realize that many institutions have been cutting staff and feel uneasy about encroaching.

Secondly, for the jobs that I have applied for... how frequently should I call or email to convey to them my continued interest in the position in which I  have applied?  Would continued phone and email contact deter an institution from hiring me?
