In some of our buildings we have the dark
tinted Plexiglas. It does dramatically change the light in the room, which, I
guess is the point. However, since our buildings generally have no electricity,
very dark spaces make it hard to see, which can impact the visitor experience
and sometimes their safety.
I have been looking at some of the newer
window films. In particular, 3M’s Prestige line. They do not use any
metals in the film, and there is a clear version and a tinted version. The film
reduces or eliminates UV, and reflects (or is it refracts?) the heat or
infra-red light, which are two of the components of fading. I was considering
the clear because we need the light, so if we can reduce or eliminate the other
aspects, that would be very helpful.
However, I am not a conservator, so it
will be great to hear from the experts. Also, while on the topic of Plexiglas,
I was surprised to speak with our facilities director, whose previous job
included making industrial clean rooms. He said they would not use Plexiglas
because it off-gassed, particularly during its first six months. Knowing that
it is widely used in museums for cases, framing, etc., I would love a
conservator’s comments on that.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] UV Film vs.
Bronze-colored Plexiglas
We are looking at options to cover some of our single-pane windows in
the original part of our building to block UV when we reinstall the
gallery. I was considering using UV film, but someone I have been
consulting with said the the newer and better recommendation from conservators
is to use Bronze-colored plexiglas that blocks 75-90% of visible light.
I was wondering if any of you were familiar with the Bronze-colored plexi and
have used it. Does it change the color of light much, is it effective, is
it difficult to install. Also what manufacturers have you worked
with. These windows, which are up along the ceiling, provide much of the
light for the gallery. I would appreciate any comments.
Thanks in advance for all of your help.
