I don’t have an answer to your specific question, but I hope your colleague is familiar with Frederick Douglass’ famous speech “What, to the American Slave, Is Your Fourth of July.”

I also wonder if your colleague might get better responses if you specify a time period. I am guessing you are referring to a time period after America’s independence, when the 4th was celebrated as a holiday.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] July 4th Question

Hi all,

I’m assisting a colleague with a research question and I wanted to see if any of you have any documentation.  Could any of please provide documentation of what slaves were doing during the 4th of July in the south?  I look forward to your replies.  Many thanks!

Best wishes,

Jeff
