It is possible the item may have been left at your institution to be considered for acquisition and accessioning. Most places have a separate form for this detailing where the item came from and the fact that it is under consideration but that the museum does not have any ownership of the item at that specific time. Many places are trying to move away from this practice in order to minimize confusion and liability. If this is what was done in the past it would be important to figure out if you have proper documentation for the item assuming the institution decided to acquire it. This note is occurring a few time in our accession book. Might it mean a loan? Other items are identified as "Loaned." Regards, Joshua K.
