Giving it to the staff has already obviously become contentious. I think to avoid this, it might be best to make an outside donation of the entire lot. But in future, this is something to address in your collections policy - the process for disposing of items donated but not accessioned. In addition to Goodwill/Freecycle/Craigslist with all of their attendant issues, I'll make one more recommedation: call your local community radio or college radio station. Most maintain a surprisingly large vinyl collection, and already have a process for taking in record donations and disposing of duplicates. What's more, most are nonprofits and this can represent an-kind donation, and probably be closer to honoring your donor's original purpose. -----Original Message----- From: Museum discussion list [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Audra Oliver Sent: Thursday, April 30, 2009 9:33 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Vinyl Records...unwanted It seems to me that we are forgetting ethics / conflicts of interest / = publicity and so on in this thread. 1. Freecycle - discretely only - certainly with no link to the museum. = What will people think? Tell staff ahead of time so they can tell relatives so they can jump on = the offer *- A resounding NO to this one. You don't tell friends, you = don't tell family * that's like insider trading, not ethical. As a = government employee, I cannot buy my agency's surplus items, I cannot tell = friends or family when something is headed for surplus either. >>> [log in to unmask] 4/29/2009 7:51 PM >>> I was just about to suggest Freecycle, but you beat me to it, Gayle! The = other advantage of Freecycle is that someone will pick them up, you do not = have to take them somewhere. I agree with the previous post, all or = nothing - no cherrypicking. Presumably, you could let your staff know how = they would be disposed of, and if one of them (or perhaps one of their = family members) was the first to respond, you would have freely offered = them to everyone, so no favoritism.
