Hi Kurt--as a veteran of several start ups in different phases--I don't know any good, reliable guide to start ups besides talking with everyone in the field that your start-up is going to be covering.  They are terribly tricky and fickle, but do have similar historical arcs.  AAM, ASTC and other organizations provide some how-to books for start-ups.  The most valuable reference I found was a book recommended by Marilyn Rothenberg from People, Places & Design--it's Seymour Sarasen's  Creation of Setting in Future Societies.  It is a series of case studies done of visionary not-for-profits and their life cycles.  It is no longer in print, but you could probably get in on the out-of-print market.  Both start-ups that I worked for that actually opened, are no longer in existence in their original form and this book is a great study of the Darwinian principles that have an effect on start-ups and the critical stages of moving from opening to sustainability.  They are serious tough cookies to make successful.  Store front, storefront, storefront is mantra that you should remember.  Good luck!

Hello,

Does anyone know if there is a good online resource/reference on "how to" start a new museum -- something like a set of standards or "best of practice" when creating a new museum in the US?

Thanks,
Kurt Stuchell
