Make sure that all written loan agreements are between the museum and the owner and not you. A member of their board or staff should sign off on all agreements - and they should check with their insurance company to see if there is coverage for third party objects - an insurance rider may be required.

I'm a Museum Studies Grad. Student who has volunteered to
help with an upcoming exhibit at a small local history
museum.  When conferring with an old museum internship
supervisor she said I should ask them about my liability
regarding the loaned objects.  This museum has had a history
of break ins, with objects stolen and is not in the best
neighborhood.  I hadn't thought of this and asked this at
our last exhibition meeting exhibition, I was told that
their insurance would cover it.  However because they are in
between directors, I thought I should get a "second opinion"
about this.  Even though I am a volunteer would I be liable
for this?  If so would I need a contract?  Thanks!
