Mistakes:

  1. Don’t tell me your astrological sign as proof that you’re a good worker. (yes, it was amusing, but probably not a good move in most cases – especially if you’re not saying it as a joke.)
  2. Don’t show cleavage
  3. Don’t ask for coffee “to go”
  4. Don’t ask me to make you an extra photocopy of your resume
  5. Don’t ask me overly personal questions (especially about non-job things) – friendly is good, overly personal at this stage is not.

Some impressive things:

  1. Ask an insightful question about the museum and/or the job that (a) proves you’ve done your research, and (b) shows you will be able to ask the right questions (and go about answering them) when on the job.
  2. Always send a thank you note.
  3. Have concrete examples ready to demonstrate how you can handle difficult situations, work with others, or other similar potential interview questions.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] HIRING HELP: Interview Mistakes

In an effort to help those who seek employment, I'm asking your feedback about mistakes you've seen candidates make in the interview process, and I'd also like to know about those things interviewing candidates said or did that simply wowed you.  I will compile your responses and provide them to the MuseJobs folks. Thanks for considering my request.
