Where to start?
First, I’ll assume that I’ve weeded through the
not-at-all-qualified pile and everyone who comes in to interview is someone who
theoretically can contribute to the organization in the advertised position.
Mistakes:
·
Showing up late
·
Not showing up and not calling to say they won’t be showing
up
·
Showing up unprepared (for example, asking me to hand back their
resume so they could answer my questions)
·
Repeating what I’ve said previously in the interview when I
ask why they are interested in this organization (see “showing up
unprepared”)
·
Looking at their watch during the interview
·
Not asking questions of me after my questions to them are done
·
Bringing someone else to the interview (whom I have to tell to wait
outside)
·
Chewing gum during the interview
·
Finishing my sentences (99% of the time incorrectly)
·
Staring at me blankly
·
Taking cell phone calls during the interview
Good things:
·
Being curious and inquisitive
·
Being enthusiastic
·
Being prepared (extra copies of resumes, dressing appropriately,
done homework on the organization)
·
Can think on their feet
·
Polite to everyone
·
TURNS OFF THEIR CELL PHONE!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] HIRING HELP: Interview Mistakes
In
an effort to help those who seek employment, I'm asking your feedback about
mistakes you've seen candidates make in the interview process, and I'd also
like to know about those things interviewing candidates said or did that simply
wowed you. I will compile your responses and provide them to the MuseJobs
folks. Thanks for considering my request.
