Northern States Conservation Center is pleased to announce the launching of its new online museum certificate program. Students, no matter where they are located on the globe, may gain the basic and expert skills needed to run an excellent museum.

The New Museum Certificate Program from museumclasses.org starts in January:
·        Earn professional credentials without costly travel.
·        Level I provides you a basic understanding of many different facets of museums.
·        Level II provides you in-depth knowledge of one area of museums.

Requirements:
·        Complete 10 full courses and two short courses for each certificate.
·        Attend one statewide, regional or national multi-day museum conference.
·        Complete a final project. This project can be in the form of an exhibition, a paper, a conference presentation, or other format approved by NSCC.
·        Attend a final chat session with instructors online to answer specific questions that test knowledge of the museum topics studied.

How it works:
·        $25 annual fee to register for the program.
·        Three years to complete each certificate level.
·         Successfully complete 10 full courses and 2 short courses for each certificate level.  (One course cannot be used for different certificate levels.)
·        Each certificate has some required courses and a number of optional courses.
·        Former museumclasses.org students receive credit for courses they successfully completed.

Certificate Levels:
·        Level I: General Museum Certificate:
Provides a broad overview and understanding of all areas of museums. Completion of the general museum certificate ensures competency in basic museum functions, from management to collection care and registration to creating an exhibit. 

        Level II: Museum Specialist Certificates

·        Level IIA. Certificate in Collections Management and Care:
A broad range of courses, from preservation environments to collections cataloging, ensures the student is well-versed in conservation principles, collections management, registration and curatorial concepts and skills. Students can tailor their course choices to concentrate on the materials found in their institution’s collections.

·        Level IIB. Certificate in Exhibit Practices: After an overview of exhibit fundamentals, the certificate covers the specifics of exhibit design, lighting, security, scripting and evaluations.  Optional courses provide flexibility to tailor the certificate to the student’s needs. The Certificate in Exhibit Practices ensures a high level of competency in all facets of museum exhibits.

·        Level IIC. Certificate in Museum Administration and Management: Starting with the mission statement and covering people management, fiscal responsibility, marketing and governance structures, the Museum Administration and Management Certificate ensures a thorough understanding of all facets of upper level museum management. Included are courses on volunteer and staff management and motivation.

·        Level IID.  Certificate in Museum Facilities Management: Learn what you need to know about museum facilities, from security systems, environmental controls, cleaning, disaster preparedness, fire prevention and pest management. Completing 10 courses in this certificate level ensures a high level of competency and understanding in how the museum’s envelope protects the collection it houses.
