Well, I can say from personal experience that it really bites to be laid off in the midst of a big capital campaign.

Intellectually, you understand that capital money cannot be used for salaries, but emotionally, it is hard hard hard to swallow.

Here are two headilines from the Oregonian. "OMSI invites ideas for big expansion" (Nov 15, 2008) and "Omsi announces layoffs" (Nov 19, 2008). The expansion price tag is about $50 million. The number of layoffs is 20, and is part of a 10% spending reduction. Now to my point.

Are other museums facing near term layoffs from the economic climate? Also, could  the debt incurred during the recent binge of expansion at many museums be a factor in staffing? (I am not saying this is the case at OMSI, I have no inside information).

I feel for the folks being layed off from OMSI, but at least they will recieve severance and outplacement support (according to the Oregonian), which is rare in this field. I have to wonder about the wisdom of publicly announcing planning for a large expansion five days before laying off employees though.
