On Saturday, January 10, 2009, Professor Colin Renfrew will receive the SAFE Beacon Award at a Lecture & Reception co-sponsored by the non-profit organization SAFE/Saving Antiquities for Everyone and the Penn Cultural Heritage Center. The event will take place in Philadelphia at the Marriot Downtown Hotel where SAFE will also be an exhibitor at the AIA/APA Annual Meeting

The evening will begin with the lecture "Combating the Illicit Antiquities Trade: the 1970 Rule as a Turning Point (or How the Metropolitan Museum Lags Behind the Getty)" by Professor Renfrew, who will be honored for his life-long service to archaeology and efforts to raise public awareness about the looting of the world's ancient heritage and the trade in illicit antiquities. Prof. Renfrew will also lead a SAFE Tour on Sunday, January 11, at the University of Pennsylvania Museum.

To commemorate the event, SAFE will publish and distribute a Souvenir Journal which enables individuals, firms, institutions and organizations to recognize and congratulate the honorees by reserving space for an advertisement or formal congratulations. Some 2,000 copies will be distributed at the AIA/APA Annual Meeting to conference attendees, at the Beacon Award ceremony itself, as well as at the SAFE booth.

All SAFE Beacon Award Souvenir Journal advertisers’ names and website addresses will also be posted on the SAFE website, at the SAFE booth on the convention floor at the AIA Meeting, in the SAFE e-newsletter that is distributed to hundreds of SAFE members and friends, as well as in the Souvenir Journal itself.
