Good Morning,
We have been trying to deaccession a painting from our
collection for some time, but have been unable to locate a new home for the
piece. The painting is:
Early Spanish Explorers in the American Southwest 1528-1555
by George M. Ottinger
Oil on Canvas 89”x 66”
One painting, oil on board. Scene depicts Cabeza de Vaca, a friar (Marcos de
Niza), another Spaniard, and a black man (Estebanico). These were very early
Spanish explorers searching for the legendary "Seven Cities of Gold."
The artist has placed de
Vaca and
the friar in center with the Spaniard to the left and the black man to the
right. They are passing through a desert in the American Southwest comprising
what is now Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. They look ragged and dejected.
Colors are soft-toned, almost pastel. Rendering is very sketch-like. Almost
primitive in style. Signed "G.M.O." in lower right corner.
The painting does not fall into our collecting focus and we
would like to transfer it to a collection where it will be used. If
you are interested in the painting, please contact me so I can send images.
Thank you,
Carrie Snow
